A Marriage Framed In Christ Is Eternal

TheDiscipleMD

A number of years ago  I was able to attend my family reunion. Part of the reunion was a night at the temple. There my father presided over a sealing session attended by family members. During the course of that session I was able to serve as a witness, participant and observer of the proxy marriages.  During the latter part of the session I was seated as an observer of the ordinances. I was located directly across from the altar, so as to see the couples as they knelt, clasped hands and listened to the sealer. My Dad pronounced the words that contained the covenant, promises and power to bind a couple together throughout the eternities. As I sat there I couldn’t help but notice that my Father was being framed in by the couple and by the altar that was in front of me. I thought how symbolic and appropriate it was that my father, who represented Christ’s power unto exaltation, was framed by a righteous couple and the sacred altar of God.

The symbolism took on deeper significance to me when, within weeks after this experience, my brother-in-law tragically died.  I had watched from that vantage point as he and my sister held hands while lovingly smiling at one another across the altar. I am sure that both now cherish the opportunity they shared that night of vicariously renewing their covenants with the Lord. Some of you are still young in age and marriage. As the years pass, the love that is now present in your marriages will grow, intensify, and the rosebud of your love will fully bloom into a thing of immense beauty! At least it has for me! As that beauty unfolds you will also discover, on a more personal level, that separation is inevitable. That thought is both repelling and repugnant! Yet, it is a reality. None of us shall escape its grasp.

Our hope lies in the teachings of the restored gospel. Only through its teachings are we assured that, if we keep Christ “framed in our marriages”,  they will be in force when the day of darkness comes. Young married couples will not fully appreciate this message at this time, but, as the sun rises, so surely it will set. When you see it begin to pass over the noon day of your life “…. remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you… because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall” (Helaman 5:12).

If we build our lives on “the sure foundation”, the sun will never set on our marriages. My sister is now separated from her husband by death, but lives with the assurance that because they ‘framed’ their marriage in Christ, it will last not just for a lifetime, but for the eternities.

“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort”, ( 2 Cor. 1:3) for, “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.”
