By The Voice Of The People

During this election season I am reminded of a scripture.

“Therefore, choose you by the voice of this people…Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people. And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land. (Mosiah 29:25-27).

The words above are from King Mosiah. He was a wise man who recommended to the people of Nephi to not have a King, but appoint judges. This form of government was recognized by King Mosiah as better than an absolute ruler because, although a good ruler would be great, he exclaimed “For behold, how much iniquity doth one wicked king cause to be committed, yea, and what great destruction!”, and I might add, what great wickedness can be wrought by electing individuals that do not adhere to the principles of righteousness.

We must continue to teach and preach the gospel to all those we come into contact with so that the voice of the people will continue to desire what is right in the eyes of our Lord. Sadly, I hear of admiration for men and women who clearly do not have this in mind. Principles of righteousness are at times scoffed at and what is considered righteous is portrayed as wicked and visa versa. There are still many good men and women who run for offices in the land who are righteous and have a desire to bless the lives of our citizens. All of us, no matter what party affiliation, should take the time to exercise not only our right to vote, but also our right to have our voice heard regarding civic matters. “By the voice of the people” only works when “we the people” take the time to express it through the voting process.
