The Vanity Of It All!

TheDiscipleMD

When I was a young boy I was often told that I looked like Timmy, the young boy on Lassie. Later as a young man quite often I was compared to JFK, which was flattering to me. But recently my daughter  compared  me to an aging British comedian who I think is quite a homely fellow.   I didn’t know if I should play the part of a comedian and make a joke of it or lay my head down and cry.  A good friend of mine even made a cut out of the man’s face and showed up at a dinner taunting me with it.  There is no question that time is eroding my physical body, but does it have to happen so fast and leave me so…well…hideous! The answer, of course, is…Yes! The Lord said, “…for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” (Gen. 3:19)

This life is temporary. Our bodies were formed from this earth and they shall return to it in due time. The significance of this fact sharpens as you get older. Last year there was a reunion of sorts as teammates of mine gathered to celebrate a softball championship we had won back in 1980. I was unable to make it so one of them kindly sent me a photo of them gathered at a restaurant for the celebration. As I studied the photo I couldn’t tell who was who, as I hadn’t seen many of them for over twenty years. In fact, I might as well have been looking at a photo of total strangers.

The great hope for the aged, and for the young, though it is not so crystalized in their minds as it is with us “old” folks, is that youth can return and the full function of our bodies will be restored. This great hope is provided to us by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the Savior of the world. All mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of his gospel. What a wonderful thing to hold onto.

I have great hopes that one day I will return to my former state. That my body might be renewed and that someday once again I will hear spoken, “You know, you look a lot like JFK!” (The vanity of it all)
