Holding Hands With God

A few years ago I was able to attend a performance put on by a number of women in my church. They performed beautifully and I was moved many times by their singing as well as by the spoken word. If you have witnessed the performance of “Women at the Well” you know that the music revolves around the lives of women who lived and associated with Christ during his lifetime. The songs represent some of the deepest feelings that these women might have felt about the Savior of the world.

One of the numbers centers on Mary, the mother of Jesus. The words speak of the “miracle” of Christ being born to her. As I watched and listened, in my mind’s eye, the sister singing that song transformed into my deceased Mother. I imagined that she too, thought of me as a miracle. Certainly being the mother of the Savior of the world is a unique experience. But aren’t all of us miracles to our mothers when we are born! Aren’t all mothers holding a small miracle in their arms when the babe is first placed there? I’m not a mother, but I am sure that if you asked any woman who has given birth, they will tell you of the miracle of having a baby. I know that as a father of five, each time I first held my newborn infants in my arms, I marveled at it all. The thought of such conjures up in my heart the deepest feelings of divinity I could hope to experience in this life!

So I left the performance uplifted in many ways. I gained a greater appreciation for the women who influenced Jesus Christ and again was reminded of his life and mission. But uniquely, I had once again experienced the feelings that come from God regarding the divine nature of families. Also of the Godly nature of birth and the touching and unique relationship that exists between mothers and their children. Indeed, I think all mothers could equally shout in praise to God, as did Mary upon the revelation that she was with child, “For he that is mighty hath done to me great things: and holy is his name.” (Luke 1:34)

Each child, each of us, really is a miracle! We don’t have to be the mother of the Savior of the world to experience what it is like to feel the hand of Heavenly Father in our lives. When I held my wife’s hand in those glorious moments when our children came forth into the world, I also knew, that I was, on a more personal level, vicariously holding onto the hand of God!
