Is There A Safe Place To Raise Children?

Is there a safe place to raise children in today’s world? The answer was given by Boyd K. Packer. (“The Key to Spiritual Protection”, GC, Oct. 2013) I quote him:

“Parents today wonder if there is a safe place to raise children. There is a safe place. It is in a gospel-centered home. We focus on the family  in the Church, and we counsel parents everywhere to raise their children in righteousness.”

One might ask, “What does a gospel-centered home look like?” Well, I think the apostles and prophets have given counsel and advise on such a home when they continually remind us as families to be prayerful in all things. We need to be church going and make scripture reading a daily part of our family life. As the phase implies, we need to make the gospel of Jesus Christ at the center of our lives and that of our children.

One of the “keys to spiritual protection” that Elder Packer emphasized in his remarks was scripture reading. He said:

“Make scripture reading a part of your regular routine, and the blessings will follow. There is in the scriptures a voice of warning, but there is also great nourishment.

If the language of the scriptures at first seems strange to you, keep reading. Soon you will come to recognize the beauty and power found on those pages.

Paul said, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

He then challenged us by saying that we can test this promise for ourselves.

Over the course of my lifetime I have tested this promise, and have found that reading consistently  in the scriptures does provide spiritual protection.

We do live in perilous times, as testified of by ancient and modern prophets. Yet, the Lord has given us a formula by which we may escape the perils of the world.  There are no guarantees that our families will go untouched by the filth of this generation. But, our odds are heavily increased that our families will be faithful if we follow the direction and counsel oft given to us by God’s ancient prophets and those of today.  Jeffrey R. Holland once said, “…we can hardly expect the children to get to shore safely if the parents don’t seem to know where to anchor their own boat.” (“A Prayer for the Children”, April, GC, 2003)

May we make our homes, “gospel centered”, so that our homes may be a safe harbor for our children in perilous times.
