Let Not The Law Rob The Spirit!

TheDiscipleMD

Over the years the leaders of the church have addressed every major doctrinal and social issue of our day.  Often they give counsel and although we say we listen, often our memories fail to remind us to take action. We hear the words, but don’t apply the principles taught. After all, it is easy to acknowledge words but much harder to follow through with its implementation.

Such is the case with a message delivered to us from Russell M. Ballard several years ago. His message is one I felt was well founded and needed. Many years ago it become apparent to me that righteous members of the church, at times, find themselves unbalanced in their lives and on occasion focusing on details that are of little significance, or at the least, details that are not that important.  I quote a paragraph from Ballard’s message:

“…may we focus on the simple ways we can serve in the kingdom of God, always striving to change lives, including our own. What is most important in our Church responsibilities is not the statistics that are reported or the meetings that are held but whether or not individual people—ministered to one at a time just as the Savior did—have been lifted and encouraged and ultimately changed. Our task is to help others find the peace and the joy that only the gospel can give them. In seven words, Jesus summarized how we can accomplish this. He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15) (O Be Wise, Oct., 2006, GC)

Everyone of us should, on occasion, refer back to this message lest we forget the object of the gospel. It is so easy to get caught up in the ‘bells and whistles’ of programs, while losing the spirit of love that should accompany all service that we render to the Lord. While serving in Christ’s church we do not want to become like the Pharisees and let the laws rob the spirit. By so doing we might find ourselves, at the last, under the same condemnation.
