Our Own Private Kryptonite

All of us are familiar with the fictional element “Kryptonite” from the superhero mythos. Kryptonite is the “Achilles heel” of the invulnerable hero we call “Superman.” It is one of the few things that can kill him. As a little boy, I used to follow the “Adventures of Superman” via comic books and through the television series of the same name. Superman was humble and never wanted recognition for the good deeds he did. I always loved how he got the “bad guy” in the end. He always made things right! But, he had a physical weakness, and that was his vulnerability to “Kryptonite.” From time to time, some “bad guy” would discover Superman’s weakness and use it against him. Fortunately for Superman, usually Jimmy Olsen or Lois Lane would help him out in his time of peril. Superman would then recover and save the day!

Like Superman, no matter how good a man or woman we are, each of us has our own weaknesses. Some of those weaknesses are readily apparent to our friends and neighbors. But most are private and are known to us alone. Each of us should know by now that we should shun the “Kryptonite” and stay as far away from it as possible. Having weaknesses is nothing to be ashamed of; but it’s something that we need to keep “in check.” In fact, if we deny we have any weaknesses, we are only fooling ourselves. In the scriptures the Lord taught a powerful lesson when he said:

“…if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace if sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

It is important for us to recognize that we have weaknesses. It is the first stage in humbling ourselves before our maker. When an ancient prophet admitted his weaknesses, the Lord told him this:

“And because thou hast seen thy weakness thou shalt be made strong, even unto the sitting down in the place which I have prepared in the mansions of my Father”.

I know that all of us desire to “sit down” in the mansions of our Father. Recognizing and then avoiding our own private  “Kryptonite” is an important step in achieving that lofty goal. May we be humble enough to rely on the Lord, and others, to help us through difficult times so that our weaknesses may “become strong unto” us. Let us be wise and avoid the areas in our public and private lives where we know we are weak! Trust in the Lord. In Him, we can find the strength to overcome all!
