On The Heels Of The Bishop

Many years ago I accompanied the Bishop to make a visit to a family that had just lost a loved one. I sat and listened to their sorrowful words and watched as tears ran down their cheeks. I watched the Bishop show tenderness and kindness in his thoughts and actions. He received nothing for his time, nothing for his service. I have been on the heels of a number of Bishops in my life. They silently serve, like many others, from coast to coast, from sea to sea, and from continent to continent. The cameras are not on, and these players on stage are not being paid. Their achievement is great and the spirit of God tempers their judgment. I’m thankful to know that my church is led in this way… its leaders carry more than just a smile, a wave, or a handshake to the people. Instead, their hands reach out and lift. Their backs carry the weak, and their legs walk to the beat of the Savior’s charge “…Feed my sheep” (John 21:17)”

As I left that day with my Bishop, I again witnessed the miraculous nature of selfless service rendered by those who love the Lord. The scene brought to mind the words of the Savior when he said:

“Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25)

I am grateful for remarkable men and women who serve with little fanfare.
