Valen-tides!

Tides are caused by the gravity of both the Moon and the Sun “pulling” at the water. Most of the time, it seems that the forces of nature are “pulling” things away from us. If your lucky, every once in a while the tide brings you something priceless. In my case the sun, moon, and the even the stars aligned forty-six years ago today in a blind date, to bring me the greatest of all gifts, my wife.
(A forever ‘thank you’ to my sister who called me and said, “I met this girl at work today. I’m telling you, this is your girl. She’s everything you ever wanted! Trust me!”)

In the year 2000 I took my family to a popular movie of that time called, “Castaway”, starring Tom Hanks. The movie told his story of being the sole survivor of a plane crash and being stranded on an island, alone, for eight years. The need for companionship is so strong, and needed, that he creates a friend out of a volleyball he names “Wilson.” Each time I watch the scene where the volleyball floats away from Hanks, and he sobs out of control in losing his ‘imaginary’ friend, a huge lump forms in my throat, and I want to join him in sobbing. Not because he is losing his ‘friend’ but because it is so pitiful that he has created such a relationship with a volleyball. Love, in all it’s forms, is the essence of happiness. The quest for love is primary in every healthy human.

Hanks is rescued when a partial ‘port-a-pot’ washes ashore, providing him with a sail to get off the island. After returning to civilization and finding his fiancé has married someone else, his character makes a powerful statement. He says, “I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring!”

For all those who suffer, and wait for the day their tide comes in with that someone, “Who knows what tomorrow will bring to you! Perhaps a blind date! Till then, keep on breathing; tomorrow the sun will rise.

I started a habit in year one of my marriage, of dedicating a song to my wife on Valentine’s Day. A few  years ago, I chose a song sung by the country group ‘Midland’ entitled ‘Put The Hurt On Me.’ They sing:

“Kill me softly, baby, with your kiss
If I go I wanna go like this
Come and be as cool as you can be
Yeah, baby, put the hurt on me!”

My wife’s still cool as can be, and she still puts the hurt on me. That’s the way I want it to be, when the final tide goes out for me!
