A ‘Clown On Call’

I once received a text message from my wife informing me that she was feeling sad that day and she was going to need a lot of cheering up when we both got home from work. I responded back, ‘I am your ‘Clown on call.’ She responded back, “Can a clown really cheer me up.” Answer- “ABSOLUTELY!”

I think one of greatest blessings of being a husband and wife is being able to be a ‘clown on call’ for each other. Humor, in my opinion is such an important part of a healthy relationship. So often when I have found myself in a stressful state of mind, my wife has used humor to lighten my load or give me a break from my worries. I hope I have done the same for her. Over the years, many tense moments between us, when we have disagreed on a particular way of handling a problem, has been defused when one of us becomes ‘a clown on call.’

M. Russell Ballard once said:

“A good marriage and good family relationships can be maintained through gentle, loving, thoughtful communication. Remember that often a glance, a wink, a nod, or a touch will say more than words. A sense of humor and good listening are also vital parts of good communication.” (‘Keeping Life’s Demands In Balance’)

Life is a serious occupation. When you can be a ‘clown on call’ for your spouse, it makes life easier and creates laughter that can sooth the soul and bind the heart. May we be willing to open our hearts and minds to seeing the value of creating clean humor in our daily lives, and be there to lift and help our spouses in their time of need. Smiling and laughter is contagious! ‘If you chance to meet a frown, do not let it stay, quickly turn it upside down and smile that frown away.’
