It Is Not Easy to See Competitors “Take Advantage Of Their Neighbor” And Prosper!

Losing is something that happens to all of us in this life. Even for good men, life is full of disappointments! The same can be said of good women. I have heard often throughout my life  that as a businessman that if I obeyed the “golden rule” I would sooner or later prosper.  I have also often heard that “what goes around: comes around.”  While I believe that these statements are true in the context of an eternal perspective, it is not always easy to see your competitor “take advantage” of his neighbor and prosper in this life, which happens quite often. Sometimes doing the right thing is learning that in so doing we will lose some of “this” life’s reward for a more eternal reward. However frustrating this may be to some of us we must not be short-sighted and do as Esau did.

“And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.  And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.  Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.” (Genesis 25:31,33-34).

The shortsightedness of Esau earned him a meal of bread and pottage of lentiles, but cost him his “birthright” with all its privileges and blessings. So there will be times in this life when we will be offered a “pottage of lentiles” in exchange for what appears to be very little. However, I have found that obedience to the gospel principles will maintain our “birthright” and the day will come when those who have sold them for “pottage” will curse the day they did so. Worldly things come and go but eternal treasures are forever.
