We live in “morally turbulent times” What some call “moral”, others decry as “immoral” and visa versa. It has become somewhat of a “morals” game with unlimited opinions as to who is right and who is wrong. This is not a new game. It’s the same game that has been playing out since before the foundation of this earth. In fact, if you study the history of our world, you’ll find that living in “morally turbulent times” is more the norm than the exception.

“And Adam and Eve blessed the name of God, and they made all things known unto their sons and their daughters.And Satan came among them, saying: I am also a son of God; and he commanded them, saying: Believe it not; and they believed it not, and they loved Satan more than God. And men began from that time forth to be carnal, sensual, and devilish” (Moses 5:12-13)

When it reads that Adam and Eve made all things “known” unto their children, it means that they were passing down to their children the commandments as given and taught to them by God himself. Yet, Satan convinced some of Adam’s posterity to “believe it not”, meaning, to not accept the moral code that had been given by the Lord. From that time forth, the scriptures record, men became “carnal, sensual, and devilish”. So, from the first family down to our families the battle has been raging over the “Lord’s way” or “Satan’s way”. You can spin it however you want but that is the sum of it all.
“Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually” (Moroni 7:12)
When Mormon, as quoted by Moroni, says that the devil “inviteth and enticeth” to sin, it means to “persuade”. It means he get’s us to “rationalize” away the standards of the Lord. And Satan and his teachings have been very persuasive over the course of history. I remember reading of Korihor, in the Book of Mormon, and his reasons for teaching his own “brand” of morals. Remember?
“…And I have taught his (Satan’s) words; and I taught them because they were pleasing unto the carnal mind; and I taught them, even until I had much success, insomuch that I verily believed that they were true; and for this cause I withstood the truth…” (Alma 30:53)
Notice that Korihor taught Satan’s concepts or morals so well and with so much success that he actually “converted” himself. But being convinced of his own words didn’t make them true or right. When you choose to oppose the Lord’s standards, you are embracing the standards or morals of Satan. It’s as simple as that! We live in a society that enacts laws and rules. Sometimes those rules and laws are not in accordance with the laws of God. For instance, just because there is legalized prostitution in Nevada doesn’t mean the Lord approves of it. Some might argue they have the “legal” right to do what they want, but that doesn’t mean we would come out in support of it. Who holds the key as to what is moral? For those of us who believe in living prophets, they do. They are the oracles of God. We can choose to be children of Adam who follow the commands of our creator, or “believe it not”. But I don’t think we can fool ourselves by thinking we can do both. Because in so doing we begin down the pathway of Korihor, who eventually “converted” himself right out of the kingdom of God. Wise are the words of the hymn, “Come, Listen to a Prophet’s Voice”.
Come, listen to a prophet’s voice,
And hear the word of God,
And in the way of truth rejoice,
And sing for joy aloud.
We’ve found the way the prophets went
Who lived in days of yore.
Another prophet now is sent
This knowledge to restore
Then heed the words of truth and light
That flow from fountains pure.
Yea, keep His law with all thy might
Till thine election’s sure,
In these turbulent times, safety can be found in following the prophets voice.
