Take Heart…We Know Enough!

I’m sure all of us have taken school, or professional exams at some point in our lives. Seldom if ever do we score 100%, yet we graduated from schools, or received professional designations. Having a perfect score is not a requirement in gaining earthly honors. So too, we are not expected to score 100% on our earthly exam given by Heavenly Father. I was impressed with the talk given a few years ago by Neil L. Anderson because it addressed this very problem. It seems that many of us “churchgoers’ suffer from not coming to a ” perfect knowledge” of the gospel. It can be debilitating if we allow our lack of ‘total’ understanding to hedge up our way in our quest for celestial glory. Worrying that we are not adequately prepared for the “challenge” offered by a call or request, we shrink from the assignment and forfeit many blessings that could be ours. The point of Elder Anderson’s talk was that “we know enough” to move forward.

Quoting Elder Anderson, he said:

“Our spiritual journey is the process of a lifetime. We do not know everything in the beginning or even along the way. Our conversion comes step-by-step, line upon line. We first build a foundation of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We treasure the principles and ordinances…We include a continuing commitment to prayer, a willingness to be obedient… We then remain steady and patient as we progress through mortality. At times, the Lords answer will be, “You don’t know everything, but you know enough”- enough to keep the commandments and do what is right. Remember Nephi’s words, “I know that He loveth His children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things.” (“You Know Enough,” 2008, GC)

We need to take heart and understand that we will always be inadequate, as will our understanding of the nature of all things. But I believe that Elder Anderson’s statement that we “know enough,” applies to us all. We have a Savior for a reason. When we fall short on our earth exams, He is there to make up the difference. If we will put our faith in Him and His redeeming power we will be better able to accept that total knowledge of all things is coming, but for now, ‘we know enough.’
