‘To Whom Shall We Go?”

One of my earliest childhood memories was the tragic assassination of the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. As a young boy I was taught to honor and give great respect to the President of our Country. Times change and our culture has become coarse, invasive and a bit nasty. Our media exposes the most private parts of anyone seeking this once revered office. Often they uncover things that we might need to know, but which do not elevate the soul and uplift the spirit. We as citizens are left with the scriptural refrain: “To whom shall we go!”

Many years ago I found myself conversing with my father over politics. My anger over our leaders became rather hot, and I railed against the men and women who were leading our county in directions that I thought were in error. After my tirade, my patient father asked me one simple question. He said, “So, what is the answer?” I stood there for a moment searching for a response in my mind. I replied, “I guess it is the gospel of Jesus Christ. An acceptance of Him, will lead people to change their hearts and therefore their actions.”

I am reminded of what the Savior said to his disciples:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Luke 6:45)

I left my father’s house that day knowing that of all the things I could do to change this world for the better, it would be to change the hearts of man through the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, ‘to whom shall we go: and what can we do to improve our nation? In my mind it was settled that day at my father’s house.
