To Ignore So, Is To Put Our Mortal Lives At Risk

Ten years ago on the front page of the USA Today was an article on Chief Justice John Roberts, who had just had a seizure. The article goes on to say that Justice Roberts had a similar incident in 1993. The doctors called it a “idiopathic seizure” , which means that it has no known cause. A co-director of the Seizure Disorder Center at UCLA said it can be caused by lack of sleep, stress, illness or medication. It is clear that no matter our calling in life, the human body doesn’t respect it. It clearly operates according to the nature and laws of this world.

Although we can have righteous desires in wanting to serve our families, others, or the Lord, we live in a physical world and we need to look after our physical bodies. Thus a “word of wisdom” was revealed to a latter-day prophet. There is much more to this health code than just not partaking of harmful products into our bodies. We must use wisdom in all aspects of our lives. I am reminded in the scriptures that even the Savior was in need of rest.

“And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.” (Mark 6:31-33)

Christ and the disciples were attempting to get some rest. But the people followed and we read that the Savior had compassion on them and taught and later feed them, the five thousand. Afterwards again he attempts to get rest.

“And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.” (Mark 6:45-46)

The human body is physical and we must take care of it, giving it it’s proper rest, nourishment and care. To ignore so, is to put our mortal lives at risk, taking the influence for good we can do with us to an early grave.
