What Happens If The Dawn Breaks, But There Is No Morning Light!

“What happens if the dawn breaks, but there is no morning light?” I was once asked. I fear my response was inadequate and lacking for the person who needed my help that day. And despite my best efforts to answer that question, the profound  and simple nature of that statement still lingers in my heart. What does one do when one is surrounded in darkness and cannot seem to see any light! Look to the Lord for help is sound guidance, but many suffer from a physical depressive nature, that blocks out, not only the light of the sun, but also the guiding light that comes from the most powerful ‘Son’ of all. Sometimes it can feel almost impossible to move forward in total darkness. ‘Almost’ is the key word.

“…how do you best respond when mental or emotional challenges confront you or those you love? Above all, never lose faith in your Father in Heaven, who loves you more than you can comprehend…Never, ever doubt that, and never harden your heart. Faithfully pursue the time-tested devotional practices that bring the Spirit of the Lord into your life. Seek the counsel of those who hold keys for your spiritual well-being. Ask for and cherish priesthood blessings.  Take the sacrament every week, and hold fast to the perfecting promises of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Believe in miracles. I have seen so many of them come when every other indication would say that hope was lost. Hope is never lost. If those miracles do not come soon or fully or seemingly at all, remember the Savior’s own anguished example: if the bitter cup does not pass, drink it and be strong, trusting in happier days ahead…I testify of the holy Resurrection, that unspeakable cornerstone gift in the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ! With the Apostle Paul, I testify that that which was sown in corruption will one day be raised in incorruption and that which was sown in weakness will ultimately be raised in power. I bear witness of that day when loved ones whom we knew to have disabilities in mortality will stand before us glorified and grand, breathtakingly perfect in body and mind. What a thrilling moment that will be!  (“Like a Broken Vessel, GC, Oct. 2013)

For some of us…for many of us, the dawn might not bring the light we so desire. But I believe that if we hold onto the hope of the message of the Savior, that some light can come into our lives. We may only dimly see by the rays of hope that our faith provides us. Yet, even the smallest of light can bring great illumination into the darkest regions of our souls. Having spent some time in the sport of caving in my younger years, I found that even the dimmest flashlight gave me great vision and comfort while in the bowels of the earth.

Recorded in Matthew are the words of the prophet Esaias,  referring to Jesus Christ:

“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. (Matt. 4:16)

May all of us hold onto our faith in Christ,  the light of the world. And may we have hope, through him, that the morning dawn will bring light and happiness to us all.
