When We Are Gods Unto Ourselves!

TheDiscipleMD

The doctrines of man have many times been at odds with the doctrines of God. Consider the principal of humility. It is “in vogue” to celebrate one’s accomplishments and boast of one’s own strength. This is at odds with what the Lord would have us be. Although He would have us have a good self image, He would also want us to recognize from whence came our attributes and talents.

In an article written by H. Wallace Goddard he brings up some very important points. I quote:

“As a society, we celebrate competence. We give awards for excellence. We prize innovation. We worship individual accomplishment. God is different. He chooses the inadequate. He honors the humble. He works through the meek. He makes the last first. He prefers broken hearts to sturdy competence…Secular humanism argues that we need no god because we are gods in our own right. In stark contrast, the Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that we are nothing without the God of heaven. Maybe there is no place where the doctrine of the world is so much at odds with the doctrine of the Kingdom as in our dependence on God. This should be no surprise. This starting point makes all the difference. We who are large in our own eyes, will be small in the eyes of eternity.” (“The Glorious Blessing of Inadequacy”)

The Lord told Samuel, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:10)

May we remember that our real strength comes from on high.  If we trust in our own flesh, bye and bye, we will surely see the error of our ways. May we be humble and continuely give praise to Him who gives us all.
