Whose Side Are We On?

On January 25, 1984 President Ronald Reagan explained:

“America was founded by people who believed that God was their rock of safety. I recognize we must be cautious in claiming that God is on our side, but I think it’s all right to keep asking if we’re on His side.”

When I was a boy I was appointed by teachers or classmates on a number of occasions to be a “captain” whose responsibility it was to choose others to be “on my side.” I would survey the group and try to choose the most talented of classmates who would lead my team to victory. Once in choosing sides for soccer, one of my “chosen” ones kicked the ball in our goal by accident. I remember passing by him and saying “Whose side are you on, anyway!” It is a question that we should, perhaps, ask ourselves daily.

At a BYU fireside address entitled “The Lord’s Side”, Joseph Wirthlin had this to say:

“The Lord has left no doubt in defining His side and where the Saints should be in their thoughts, words, actions, and practices. We have His counsel in the scriptures and in the words of the prophets…The Lord counseled His prophet Jeremiah to instruct the people: “Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.” (Jer. 21: 8.) That is the contrast; that is the choice. Either we are on the Lord’s side of the line or on the side of the adversary. Nephi declared, [we] “are free to act for [ourselves]—to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life.” (2 Ne. 10:23.) …To be on the Lord’s side, we need to learn that true principles will lead us to peace and happiness in this world, and to glory and exaltation in the world to come. We also need to learn that choosing the other side will only bring us problems, heartache, and sorrow.”(March 1993 Ensign).

For many years I have worked for a company whose logo bears the signature slogan “…On Your Side.” I am reminded of this slogan as it is plastered on every correspondence of the day. That slogan is a daily reminder that I should keep my priorities in order, and know, whose side I am on. We know the Lord is on our side. Meaning, He wants the best for everyone. But quoting one of my favorite hymns of yesteryear is the refrain: ” Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who? Now is the time to show.” Let us “show” by our thoughts and actions that we are teammates with our God.
