Are We Creating A”Frankenstein” Society?

Frankenstein is an 1818 novel written by English author Mary Shelley. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Much to his horror, he creates a “Monster” who, through no fault of his own, ends up being misunderstood and despised by others due to the “unnatural” look of his scary and odd appearance. Tragedy ensues for the “Monster” as he can never find acceptance and love.

As I observe what is happening today, I cannot help but wonder if we are creating a “Frankenstein Society” as we attempt to experiment with the nature of what a human is, what gender they are, and the experimentation with the nature of self-love, love itself, and the nature of the human family. Are we real, or are we not? Will Artificial Intelligence create “fake” humans in the future? I don’t know where this experimentation of our genes and identity will lead us. But it certainly doesn’t take a brilliant scientific mind to draw some basic conclusions about the possible ramifications of tampering with the core question of “who” we are as humans. The proven historical benefit of being in families with male, female, father, mother, brother, sister, sibling, and human identities is beyond dispute.

For me, the teaching, which I accept, that there is a God who is the author of this world and the Father of our spirits makes my identity clear. I am a son of an almighty God! Is this helpful? Absolutely! If I allow the world to dictate to me my identity, my whole world becomes a ball of confusion. Some of us legitimately need help in finding ourselves. But the doctrine of men is always changing, forever searching, and more often than not, never finding. Confusion begets unhappiness! And I don’t want to be unhappy if I can avoid it.

The real road to happiness is understanding that we all come from a noble birthright.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

I’m sure that many dispute the above scriptural declaration about our heritage. And everyone has that right! But from my vantage point, I can see infinite potential problems ahead for an experimental society that might end up creating “Monsters” of us all. It seems we are headed for a “Frankenstein” end of the story. And if you remember, it was not happy!
