“It Enlarged My Heart and Mind and Changed My Desires!”

“I made a life-changing choice when I decided to read the Book of Mormon in December of 1944…I read it with “real intent” and in a very short time, perhaps two or three days. The result was a supernal experience of its truthfulness, which has given constant direction to my life…It was more than a testimony; it was a real conversion which changed my thinking, my feelings, and also my behavior. It enlarged my heart and mind and changed my desires.”

The above quote from “The Life and Thought of Garth A. Stephenson,” my father, is about as concise a statement as I have ever read on what kind of change should come to a follower of Jesus Christ!

“Therefore if any man be in Christhe is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;” (2 Corinthians 5: 17-18)

Whether we are old or young, male or female, black or white, or anything in between, we can change and become new people. We can have the kind of experience that my father had—the kind that is “supernal” in nature—one that captivates our soul and enlarges our hearts. It can change our desires. The only question is whether we are willing to “experiment” with the small seed to see if it will grow. It is an “experiment” that is well worth our time.
