If you have cried tears of agony, you have joined all humanity. if you have cried tears of joy, you have joined the human race! If you have cried tears of both, you are divine! If you have lived, you will shed “a teardrop on the cheeks of time” because you are involved in the grand work of God, whose plan was designed to be ‘watered’ by the experiences that we have here on this temporary abode we call earth.
Rabindranath Tagore was referring to The Taj Mahal when he coined the phrase ‘a teardrop on the cheeks of time.” The monument was built by the Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan, of the Mughal dynasty, in memory of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal who gave him fourteen children, but died in the last childbirth. Disconsolate at her death, the shah ordered construction of the Taj Mahal as a posthumous gift and lasting monument to his love. Each one of us is a creation greater than that great edifice, and certainly, the story of love that is behind that great monument pales in comparison to the story of God’s great love for us, His children. Genesis record:
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (1:26-27)
Each of us is infinitely greater than any of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ of which the Taj Mahal is one. If we remember, day-to-day, that we are created in God’s image, our spirits should soar and our hearts should rejoice, even in the days of our trials. We do decend from Deity, not from the scum of the pond as some would teach. Our heartaches are felt by our Father and form tear drops on the cheeks of the Deity of time.
May we remember who we are, and that our tears, be they from pain or happiness, are felt by a loving Father and that our tear drops water the progress of eternity as we move forward in the grand plan of happiness that is the ‘wonder of all wonders.’
