President Ronald Reagan wrote:
“The family has always been the cornerstone of American Society. Our families nurture, preserve, and pass on to each succeeding generation the values we share and cherish, values that are the foundation for our freedoms. In the family we learn our first lessons of God and man, love and discipline, rights and responsibilities, human dignity and human frailty.
Our families give us daily examples of these lessons being put into practice. In raising and instructing our children, in providing personal and compassionate care for the elderly, in maintaining the spiritual strength of religious commitment among our people in these and other ways, America’s families make immeasurable contributions to America’s well-being.
Today more than ever, it is essential that these contributions not be taken for granted and that each of us remember that the strength of our families is vital to the strength of our nation. We cannot diminish the value of one category of human life- the unborn-without diminishing the value of all human life…There is no cause more important.”
President Reagan, like most good men, recognized years ago that when you destroy the family, you will also destroy our nation. The trend that he saw so clearly back then has continued and many of us have been witness to the slow disintegration of the fundamental building block that holds our civilization together. No matter what the world may preach, or the media may promote, the truth is self-evident: the family is the cornerstone of our civilization. In my own lifetime I have witnessed the slow decline of the family unit and with it all the evils and consequences that come with its disintegration.
It doesn’t take a very astute observer to see that with the decline of the family has come the decline of our society morals and with it a rise in crime, poverty and ungodliness! The monetary expense to our nation is driving us into bankruptcy. Be it intentional or not, those that shirk the God-given duty of the rearing of and the caring for their own, are fighting against the plan of happiness as designed by the Lord in the pre-existence. It is evident to me that we are destined to see further attacks on this God inspired unit. While the temptation might be to give in to the philosophies of men, when in doubt we need to follow the words of the prophets. They will lead us to true happiness. Trust in the Lord; trust in His servants!
