Touching the Veil Through Small Children

TheDiscipleMD

There are numerous scriptural accounts of the tender spot that Jesus Christ had for little children. None is more spiritual than the account of Christ’s blessing of the children when he came to the American Continent after his resurrection!

“And it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of praying unto the Father, he arose; but so great was the joy of the multitude that they were overcome. And…Jesus spake unto them, and bade them arise. And they arose from the earth, and he said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full. And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them. And when he had done this he wept again” (3 Nephi 17: 18-22).

Afterwards it was recorded that angels came down from Heaven and ministered to the children. The appreciation for this narrative was driven home a few years ago when my son and his family prepared to leave town for a new job. Just before they left, I offered a priesthood blessing to my son and his wife. After so doing, I was asked by my son if I could bless their eighteen-month-old twins. The thought to do so had not occurred to me. It ended up being a beautiful experience for me and hopefully for them.

As I drove away from their house, my mind reflected back to the above scriptural account of the Savior blessing the children, and I knew first hand why he had wept after so doing. There is something quite wonderful about little children. They seem to bring a smile even to the most hardened individual. When all seems to be going wrong, the smile or hug of a small child can chase away even the darkest demons.

I am sure that is why the Savior wept with joy after blessing all those children. I am sure that even the Savior of the world felt privileged, as did I, to participate in such a holy experience. These little ones are so close to our Father that it is no wonder that  Jesus Christ so enjoyed their company.  I’m grateful that my son asked me to bless his small children that day. The bonds that come through priesthood ordinances are real. They do bind. I know that when I left that day, I felt closer to him and to my daughter-in-law and I will always remember and treasure the humbling experience of blessing my grandbabies through the priesthood which I hold.  Through this experience I was able to touch the thin veil that separates me from my heavenly home. I’m forever grateful to a loving Heavenly Father who has seen fit to restore His priesthood here on earth. By so doing our Father has given all worthy men the opportunity and privilege to act in his name and bask in the blessings of so doing.
