Losing Hope Is Hell!

He was fairly emotional when our instructor, now in his seventies, pronounced one Sunday:

“There was a time in my life when I lost all hope. The feeling was desolate, lonely, wretched and evil. It was then, after losing my hope that I leaned on other’s hope so that I could survive. That was many years ago. Today, I believe in the atonement of Jesus Christ and my hope is as bright as the sun.”

In that moment, my soul was once again touched by something beyond this world, and my spirit was elevated. I felt the still voice of divinity reminding me of a great ancient prophet from the new world. He declared:

“And again, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you concerning hope. How is it that ye can attain unto faith, save ye shall have hope? And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise. Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope.”

How many times do we falter in our faith, and find that hopelessness starts to take over our lives. Losing hope is Hell because without it we can see no potential for eternal joy. And without exercising faith we cannot have any hope. And faith is only found in those who are ‘meek, and lowly of heart.’

May we not falter and lose our faith. By so doing we open our lives up to hopelessness that will swallow us whole. May we be like the instructor of my class that day. Let us follow the admonition of the Savior when he said: “Be not afraid, only believe.” (Mark 5:36)
