Living After The Manner Of Happiness

“And it came to pass that we lived after the manner of happiness.” (2 Nephi 5:27)

Lehi describes in his dream that “it came to pass that I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy. And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted…..and as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit.” (1 Nephi 8:10-12)

This “fruit” is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Like Lehi, I too have partaken of the fruit of the gospel and have found joy therein. I too am desirous that my loved ones should partake of the joy that comes from the blessings of the gospel.

If we become a seeker of happiness we will find joy. The Lord provides a formula for happiness. Ammon was on the road being a faithful missionary when he happened to meet up with Alma. The scriptures state that “this was a joyful meeting.”  Then it says:

“Now the joy of Ammon was so great even that he was full; yea, he was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell again to the earth. Now was not this exceeding joy? Behold, this is joy, which none receiveth save it be the truly penitent and humber seeker of happiness” (Alma 27:17-18)

So if we are looking to find joy in life, we will receive it if we are “truly penitent and humble.”  I believe that happiness is found in following our Savior and pattern our lives after His teachings.  The gate to happiness has always been selflessness and service to others.  So we need not search long for happiness to come along if we open the gate to our hearts, then happiness will impart,  if we are sincere and pentitant, humble seekers of happiness.
